*I take requests*
Sorry this took so long, I know I promised...and it's not even done...the rest will be later, though.
THE ULTIMATE LIST (Part 1)
By soulmusician
Copyright Fail Inc.
(Fail Inc. copyright soulmusician)
*The Ultimate List is organized (Really? No way!) By genre (MY genre, not what iTunes or Wikipedia says), band (I may talk about specific band members, I may not, you never know), and then songs by that band that I either highly recommend or I think all of you may have heard. I apologize for sometimes only recommending one song per band, but hey, at least they’re good songs. Please take your time when reading through this and try, please try, to keep your mind open to genres that you usually don’t like. You never know what you might find in this list.*
*WARNING-I CAN TALK ABOUT MUSIC FOR HOURS, SO YOU SHOULD PROBABLY GET COMFY*
Alternative
What is alternative exactly? In my mind, its rock, but with lyrics that actually mean something. Rarely are the songs about happy things. Sometimes people may scream instead of sing, but not enough to be called “Screamo.”Even this definition of mine makes no sense to me…I guess it’s like quiet rock that occasional goes Screamo, but not that often. Screw this, just read the about the bands.
AFI-This band is amazing for alternative in general, though I have to admit…the only songs by them that I listen to on a regular basis are “Miss Murder” and “Love like winter.” They’re really good songs, though. The lyrics can be hard to get sometimes.
Blink-182-Ok, I don’t know about you guys, but I grew up listening to “All the Small Things” on the radio. Ah, so nostalgic. I also recommend the song “First Date.”
Blue Foundation-The lyrics of their songs…well…but they’re good songs. I recommend “Enemy,” “Talk to Me,” and “Eyes on Fire.”
Coheed and Cambria-Ok, these people are AMAZING! I highly suggest ANYTHING from their albums “Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV, Vol. 1: From Fear through the Eyes of Madness” (yes, I know that’s long) and “In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3.” Personally, I like “Welcome Home”, “The Suffering”, “A Favor House Atlantic,” and “Apollo I: The Writing Writer.”
The Delgados- My god, I love this band. Soundtrack to my life! They’re definitely my second favorite (and that’s big, because usually there’s just Muse, and then my top 50). Their songs are meaningful, their sound is pure….I personally can’t live without “The Light Before We Land,” “Woke From Dreaming,” “Never Look At the Sun,” “Come Undone,” “Sink or Swim,” and “I Fought the Angels.” Anything from their albums “Hate,” “Universal Audio,” and “Coming in from the Cold” are absolutely wonderful. Emma Pollock’s voice is so unique and quiet, but not like an insecure quiet. But then there’s an equal balance of loud parts in the songs so you don’t get too bored with it. But not obnoxiously loud, either.
Evanescence- BOW DOWN TO THE AWESOME SINGING SKILLS OF AMY LEE!!! (Even though Jacqueline is a better singer ) Recommend “Bring Me to Life,” “Call Me When You’re Sober,” and “My Immortal.”
The Killers-This band is amazing, too. They make me feel all pumped up. Recommend their albums “Hot Fuss,” “Sam’s Town,” and “Day and Age”. Personal favorites are “Human,” “Mr. Brightside,” “Somebody Told Me,” and “When You Were Young.”
MUSE- What’s that? I get to drive you all crazy with my Muse rant already? Okay! Muse is the best band in the whole wide world. Only the awesome musical skills of Matthew Bellamy (vocals, piano, guitar), Chris Wholstenholme (bass guitar, backing vocals, keyboards), and Dominic Howard (drums, percussion, synthesizers) can produce the kind of music that they do. And they’re not just alternative, they also write some classical songs, as well (with some alternative feeling, I admit, but still really pretty. Bellamy’s piano playing is superb). Many say that their musical style was influenced heavily by Radiohead (Not in the Ultimate List. And I’m not apologizing either. They don’t belong in here)…If you agree with that statement, then let me say right now, you are Dead. Freaking. Wrong. Muse is 100% unique. MATTHEW BELLAMY’S VOICE IS A MILLION TIMES BETTER THAN THOM YORKE’S. NO ONE ELSE HAS THAT KIND OF VOCAL RANGE EXCEPT FOR MAYBE AMY LEE AND JACQUELINE, AND THEY’RE GIRLS, SO THEY DON’T EVEN REALLY COUNT. If you don’t believe me, then listen to “Hearing Damage” by Thom Yorke and then “Starlight” by Muse. NOT THE SAME. And if you ask me, “Starlight” is a whole lot more appealing lyric wise. Just because both Muse and Radiohead are imitating the alternative sound from the early 90s, just about the whole world says that Muse is copying Radiohead! Well, not true! It could have just as easily been said that Radiohead copies Muse, but oh, no, we have to go after the less popular band! And then there’s the whole issue of those “fake fans” going around because stupid Stephanie Meyer had to dedicate her last book to them, and there were songs by them in Twilight and New Moon (“Supermassive Black Hole” and “I Belong to You/Mon cœur s'ouvre à ta voix”). That’s like going around and saying that you want to help people, and then you burn down a city. It’s that annoying. Sigh. Then they had to write “Neutron Star Collision/Love is Forever” just for the movie Eclipse…I mean, yeah, great, more publicity, but THEY CAN DO BETTER. And what about all of those fake fans??? Anyway, songs are… Actually…listen to them all. Hmmm….Okay, I’ll try this from a different angle. Their album “Absolution” contains fifteen songs. I guess a theme for the songs in this album could be love or confusion. The loudest is “The Small Print,” the quietest is probably “Endlessly,” and the one that shows off Bellamy’s piano skills is “Butterflies and Hurricanes.” “Black Holes and Revelations” contains twelve songs. A possible theme is determination. Most likely to have been on a pop radio station at some time is “Starlight,” Mexican sounding is “City of Delusion,” and THE SUPER EPIC SONG THAT IS HALF OF THE REASON I GOT HOOKED ON THIS BAND is “Knights of Cydonia.” “Origin of Symmetry” contains twelve songs. Happiest songs is this are “Bliss” and “Feeling Good.” Freaking awesome (yet a little dark) piano-ness is “Space Dementia.” “The Resistance” has eleven songs. “Uprising” has been in about a million commercials since it was released. “United States of Eurasia / Collateral Damage (Excerpt from Nocturne in E-Flat, Op. 9 No. 2)” is thought provoking (to me at least). “Exogenesis Symphony parts 1-2” is beautiful. A possible theme for the album “Shobiz” is weakness. I recommend everything in it. I suppose I’ve covered the basics, but remember: Muse, not Radiohead.
My Chemical Romance (Also known as MCR to true fans)-“The Black Parade” and “I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love” albums are great. Personal faves are “Dead!,” “This is How I Disappear,” “House of Wolves,” “Teenagers” (This song is hilariously true. Even if you don’t think you’ll like this band, at least look up the lyrics to this song, I’m begging you), “Famous Last Words,” “Romance” (instrumental guitar, really pretty), “The Black Parade,” and “Honey, This Mirror Isn’t Big Enough For the Two of Us.”
Panic (!) at the Disco-Hmph. That’s all I have to say about their 2009 album, “Pretty. Odd.” Hmph. I mean, its ok, but they changed their style dramatically. AND THEY TOOK THE “!” OUT OF THEIR BAND NAME!!! If you’ve ever listened to the radio, though, I guarantee that you’ll recognize “I Write Sins, Not Tragedies.” Personal faves are all the songs in their album “A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out.” They also sang “This is Halloween” for the movie Nightmare before Christmas.
Paramore-Paramore is great. I don’t listen to enough Paramore. “That’s What You Get,” “Misery Business,” “Decode,” and “I Caught Myself” are probably their most famous songs, though.
The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus-Ok, I’ll admit it. The only song I know by them is “Face Down.” Happy? I’m not worthy of calling myself a true fan. “Face Down” is a great song, though, and that’s why it’s on my Ultimate List.
Story of the Year-is…wow. Just wow. Albums to listen to are “The Black Swan,” “Page Avenue,” and “In the Wake of Determination.” Personal faves are “Wake Up,” “Until the Day I Die,” “Welcome to Our New War,” “Sleep,” “Anthem of our Dying Day,” “Sidewalks,” and “Divide and Conquer.”
Three Days Grace-I admit again, I only listen to one song. It’s “Animal I Have Become.” But their lead singer once sang a song with Apocalyptica (see “Classical/Modern Instrumental”).
Blues
Ah, blues. Don’t worry, I won’t bore you guys. This is a genre that I mostly only tolerate.
The Black Crows-They’re style is a little hard to love…at least, for me. I had to listen to their album "The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion" nonstop for about a week before I started to love their music…
Eric Clapton-Eric Clapton is one of the best Classic Rock artists ever and you all will be doing yourselves an enormous favor by listening to “Layla” (unplugged and original versions), “Lonely Stranger,” and “Wonderful Tonight.” Really, I mean it. This guy is the best guitarist in the world, I mean it. The freaking best. Also, the song “Layla” has a funny story behind it…Basically, the song was written for Pattie Boyd (along with “Wonderful Tonight” and “Bellbottom Blues”). At the time, she was the wife of George Harrison, a guitarist in the band The Beatles (It all seems to go back to the Beatles, doesn’t it? Well, they are freaking amazing…see below). Boyd ended up leaving Harrison and marrying Eric Clapton. Some of you are probably going “Awww that’s so cute!” but wait. They ended up getting divorced for many reasons, one of which being Clapton cheating on Boyd with an Italian model and eventually having a baby with this model. The child died years later.
So it was all for nothing.
Aren’t celebrities’ lives interesting?
Seriously, though. Despite that…entire, well…crap, Eric Clapton is definitely worth listening to.
Classical/Modern Instrumental
From Europe decades ago, to soundtracks from modern movies, to electric cellists. I write a little less in this section because there aren’t any lyrics to talk about, any competition to rant about. Also, I apologize for giving up halfway and just listing classical composers from long ago without describing their styles…
Ahn Trio-I fell in love with their album “Ahn Trio: Lullaby for My Favorite Insomniac” very recently, so I don’t have a lot to say about them... Ahn Trio consists of three Korean American sisters, Angella on the violin, Maria on the cello, and Lucia on the piano. I especially like “Heart Asks Pleasure First,” (from the New Zealand movie The Piano staring Holly Hunter) but I also recommend “Oblivion,” “This is not America,” and “Lullabye.”
Apocalyptica-A Finish quartet of electric cellists who play heavy metal music. When I tell people this, they usually just stare at me like I’m crazy. It’s true, though! Some of their songs have singing, some do not. One that does is “I Don’t Care (feat. Adam Gontier)” (From Three Days Grace). If you like metal, I recommend “Domination” or “Toreador.” If you don’t, then “Nothing Else Matters” is quiet and very beautiful.
Hilary Hahn-Amazing violinist. Not much more to say. Kinda mechanical, though. I recommend watching a video of her playing Paganini. Highly impressive.
Natalie Zhu-Amazing pianist. I have a Hilary Hahn and Natalie Zhu CD, I think, and they sound really nice together.
Vanessa Mae-My god, this lady is scary talented. “Red Hot”…I have the sheet music, and lets just say it’s one of the scariest freaking things I’ve ever seen next to Paganini…

Carrie Underwood-..."Cowboy Cassanova."
The Charlie Daniels Band-Ever heard of “The Devil Went Down to Georgia”? That Charlie Daniels plays a mean fiddle…
Garth Brooks-This guy is also one of the best guitarists in the world. Recommend “The Thunder Rolled.”
Lady Antebellum- Excellent three-part harmony. “Need You Now” is great.
Taylor Swift-….Yeah, so, she can’t really sing, it’s all computers…but the guitar playing is real.
Hip-hop/Rap
First of all, rap sucks, it’s not even music. So don’t expect to actually find any real rap in this section. Second of all, hip-hop and rap are NOT the same thing.
Black Violin-I think Mrs. Culley had us listen to “Dirty Orchestra” in class once. Most of their songs have speaking in them, but “Dirty Orchestra” and “Fanfare” do not.
Young Mozart-No, this is not stuff that Mozart composed when he was like six or something, that’s the band name. It’s actually really cool, though, because their songs sound like Mozart songs, just with a hip-hop twist on them. They do have a flaw, though…The songs are very repetitive. Recommend “Romance,” “Hip-hop Sonata,” and “Ballroom Dancing.”
J-Pop
AKA Japanese Pop.
Buono!-Have only ever heard of them because they wrote a lot of songs for Shugo Chara! Doki. Good harmony.
Hatsune Miku- Techinically not a real person, just a computer singing…Her voice is taken from Fujita Saki’s, though. “Melt,” “Take it Easy,” and “Love is War.”
Kokia- She’s like the Japanese Amy Lee, but writes happier songs. Great singer, just great! “Tatta Hitotsu no Omoi,” “Ai no Merodii,” “Shiawase no Hanataba,” “DESPERADO” (taken from the Eagles. See Classic Rock in Part 2), “time to Say Goodbye,” “Chowa Oto –with Reflection-,” and “so Much Love for You.”
This concludes part one. Now go listen to music.
Sorry this took so long, I know I promised...and it's not even done...the rest will be later, though.
